Sensory Integration Therapy

TICKLES Sensory Integration Therapy

Sensory integration therapy is a clinical framework of intervention based on work done by A. Jean Ayres, Phd, OTR an Occupational therapist and a psychologist.

"Sensory Processing Disorder or SPD (originally called Sensory Integration Dysfunction) is a neurological disorder in which the sensory information that the individual perceives results in abnormal responses.”

Sensory integration therapy aims to help kids with sensory processing issues ( “sensory integration disorder”) by exposing them to sensory stimulation in a structured and organised way that will allow the brain to process and react to sensations more efficiently. Sensory inputs are required for healthy brain function. Sensory inputs influences the organisation of behaviour, learning and emotion.

Sensory integration therapy uses a range of techniques such as swinging, brushing, jumping, pushing, squeezing, rolling, and exposure to selected sounds to help children with sensory processing issues to lessen their over-reaction to or need for intense physical sensation.

Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is a condition where multi sensory inputs are not processed accurately for the optimal response as per the needs of the environment. it affects the performance of the individual in everyday activities, play skills and in social participation. symptoms may vary as per the severity which sensory systems and which combinations are involved.

Symptoms of sensory processing issues may depend on the way in which a child processes sensations. Children with Sensory Processing issues may present with difficulties like:

  • Hyperactivity, on the go,

  • Fidgety and unable to sit still, enjoys movement-based play like spinning, jumping, etc.,

  • Poor Attention span,

  • Clumsiness, poor balance or uncoordinated movements

  • Covering ears with loud noises,

  • Frequently putting things in mouth (Mouthing)

  • Picky eaters, picky food preferences

Sensory Integration therapy sessions may be recommended for children with:

• Sensory Processing disorders (Sensory issues)
• Autism Spectrum disorders
• ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
• Dyspraxia
